What you will leave with

Practical AI clarity — no coding, no hype, no vendor pitch

A clear, practical understanding of what AI can do, what it cannot, and where the hype ends and the real value begins

One priority AI use case for your business — identified using Pareto 80/20 thinking, not vendor enthusiasm

A rough financial case: current cost, implementation cost, net benefit, payback in months

Three governance questions answered: who is accountable when the AI is wrong, what data rights do you need, and what triggers a review?

Programme

Four modules — one half day

Module 1

What AI Can and Cannot Do

Three business-relevant categories: Generation, Analysis, Automation. Where SME value actually is versus where the hype is. The realistic capability map.

Module 2

Where to Start — Pareto for AI

80% of AI value comes from 20% of use cases. Identify your priority use case using MECE decomposition and 80/20 scoring — not gut feel.

Module 3

Building a Simple Business Case

Three numbers: cost of current state, implementation cost, net annual benefit. Payback in months. The conservative case that boards actually trust.

Module 4

Governance and Responsible AI

Who is accountable when AI is wrong? What data do you need, and do you have the rights? How will you know if it stops working?

Why this is different

Delivered by an ILM Assured AI for Business Mentor

Richard Shaw is one of a small number of UK practitioners formally qualified through the ILM Assured AI for Business Mentor programme to guide SME leaders through AI adoption, strategy and governance. He has no relationship with any AI vendor. He has no commercial interest in which tools you choose.

He combines this formal AI mentoring qualification with 25 years of enterprise architecture experience — including AI strategy and implementation at Defra — and an ILM Level 7 coaching qualification that allows him to challenge your thinking constructively rather than validate your existing plan.
